Machine Learning and the Pretty Girl
A pretty girl is reading a book in a garden or a park. She is wearing her reading specs. She is well dressed, well if I am being honest, very well dressed. She is thinking about something. She has a smile on her lips, so what she is reading must be funny and/or interesting. So what's wrong with the picture? Why is it funny or annoying? Can a girl not read a book outside? What's wrong with being well dressed? Aren't you supposed to smile while reading something funny? Oh!! Are you thinking, she should not be sitting in a park alone?
Let me stop you right there. There is nothing wrong with the girl or the fact that she is smiling while reading. She is perfect. What's funny and annoying is what the advertisement reads below this picture. It is advertising an online course on machine learning. I was an enthusiast of machine learning in my college days. I did a good amount of courses and read some books on this subject. Well those of you who don't know what it is, Machine Learning is the sexiest topic in the world today. If you are a computer professional, a mathematician, or a business professional, or even if you read newspapers you must have come across this word or any of its sister words like Data Science, Deep Learning, Soft Computing, etc. Companies and businesses of all kinds are using it to get an insight into customer behavior, better use their resources, increase their productivity, in turn, boost their profit. To give you even a clearer view, your Facebook feeds, YouTube and Netflix recommendations, the shopping list you see when you open Amazon, even your credit worthiness in the banks are determined using this technique.
Machine learning is the mathematical modeling of data. As the data size increases the computation increases. So we have to employ computers and write computer programs. As this topic is a combination of mathematics and computer science, I always sit in front of my laptop and keep a notebook and a pen handy. I won't be sitting in a park, with a smile in my face while reading this topic unless I am reading the first topic of the book on the history of machine learning.
This is the problem with the modern age. Twenty four seven we are being fed with the idea that success is interlinked with beauty. Yami Gautam is suggesting Fair&Lovely is the key behind her fairness. In reality, she is fairer than ninety percent of Bollywood divas. The same goes for Hrithik Roshan and Fair&Handsome. We see the most handsome cricketers advertising for energy drinks, foot wears, and many more products. I am not saying they are not successful. But in the same context, in how many of these products we see Mary Kom or Dutee Chand as the brand ambassador?
In my opinion, it would have been appropriate, if this girl would be sitting in a chair, in front of a dual monitor setup desk, there will be lines of code on one screen and some graphs on the other one. She could have a book open and would be chewing one end of her pen. Then she will seem more like a data scientist.
All of these are my opinions. You guys don't have to give a shit. But in case, you decide to give a shit, I would love to know, do you think this picture is appropriate for this advertisement and what would be in your opinion an ideal set up?
Don't know so much about the data science... But I think the suggestion you gave was better for the advertisement... Ok wait, if someone knows that what he/she is reading, then no need of seeing the picture... No one will take the course enrolled just seeing the picture... Hahaha... I was being sarcastic... But yes, the advertisement should have been presented better for which anyone can at least think about the thing that the advertisement says....
